Science lab featured in CBD study on pregnant women offspring during development

CBD News: CBD During Pregnancy May Impact Offspring Development

Recent studies from the News Medical and Life Sciences released an article about a presentation at the Federation of European Neuroscience Societies (FENS) Forum 2024. Suggest that cannabidiol (CBD), a non-intoxicating compound found in cannabis, could potentially affect offspring development when used during pregnancy.

Key Findings in the CBD Pregnancy Study:

In mouse studies, gestational exposure to CBD altered offspring behavior and affected nerve cells in the brain’s insular cortex, essential for processing emotions and sensory signals. CBD-exposed female mice moved more in new environments, while both sexes showed increased physical contact. Prenatal CBD exposure also significantly altered neuron function in the insular cortex, particularly the posterior region responsible for processing sensory information and generating behavioral responses.

Implications for Humans:

Although conducted on mice, this research raises concerns about CBD potentially impacting human fetal development. CBD crosses the placenta and reaches the fetal brain in both mice and humans, so caution is advised.

Important Considerations:

The study gave mice a low, consistent dose of CBD during most of their pregnancy. Human CBD use patterns differ, varying in dose and frequency. Researchers need further studies to fully understand the effects of prenatal CBD exposure on humans, especially long-term consequences for children.

Concerns for Pregnant Women:

Talk to your doctor before using CBD if pregnant or planning to become pregnant. They can offer personalized advice based on your health and current research. Until more is known, consider avoiding CBD during pregnancy to minimize potential risks.
